Introduction

A substantial amount of research has been carried out for a considerable period of time on the documentation of Chinatown and the intricate operations of the shophouses. Historical evidence suggests that the ground level, which includes main streets and back roads, used to be a part of the interiors of shophouses. Although the back alleys were neglected, they used to be a space where children played, neighbors socialized, and cobblers fixed worn-out shoes. In contrast, the main street was mostly used for business purposes and functioned as an extension of the shops, with the shop owners residing upstairs.in the present days, it is observed that the authorities and relevant institutions prioritize the preservation of the shophouses through gentrification, urban transformation and strict regulations.

as a result of gentrification and  "Disneylandization," the majority of shophouses in Chinatown, particularly those located on Pagoda Street and its surrounding areas, are now solely utilized for commercial activities. Due to the change in the shophouse's function, the main street's functions and activities have been organized, while the back lanes have been reduced to a service lane that only supports commercial activities. In this area, overflowing garbage bins and the smell of fermentation are worsened by the heat emitted by air-condenser units, contributing to the Heat Island Effect.

This proposal analyzes how the existing issues in the main street and back lanes can be efficiently resolved through the suggested approach. Our plan for urban conservation and regeneration focuses on reinstating activities that were common in the past, in order to make the currently underutilized space accessible to the public again. It strives to bring back the sounds of laughing and conversation, which have been replaced by a sense of formality and uniformity. The disconnection between the past and present, the modern and heritage, and people and their sense of culture or history can eventually be reconciled.
